UX Research
A 2024 usability test revealed that residents struggled to quickly locate and understand critical safety information, especially regarding gas leak detection and the 811 "Call Before You Dig" protocol.
Key Findings from Usability Testing:
Information was buried in dense paragraphs.
Minimal use of visuals or hierarchy to guide readers.
Lack of bilingual or visual-friendly elements for residents with language barriers.
We also reviewed literature on visual communication, safety material effectiveness, and community outreach methods, which reinforced the importance of clear infographics and minimal cognitive load.

Visual Design
We developed a visual strategy to ensure clarity, consistency, and alignment with City of Mesa branding. Blue was chosen as the primary color, with orange and red accents highlighting urgent and emergency details. Typography includes Garet for clean, modern body text and Sifonn for bold, attention-grabbing headings. Infographics use icons to convey leak detection, safety tips, and reporting procedures.
Additionally, we used Contrast Checker to ensure all color combinations passed WCAG standards.
